What’s the Best Wireless Ethernet Bridge?

Why use a wireless Ethernet bridge?

The bridge is a really useful device that has two main applications.


The first use is to connect two wireless networks into one large network. This allows you to greatly increase the range of your network without the signal problems that can occur when using a wireless repeater.

By connecting two networks, all devices in one network can see and interact with devices in the other network. You can also share applications and devices such as the Internet, printers and scanners over two networks.

Wireless bridges are mostly used for this purpose in large buildings such as schools and offices. However, if you have problems with your wireless signal at home, this can be a good way to extend your network to more customers.

The second use of the wireless gateway (and this is what we focus on today) is connecting devices that only have an Ethernet connection to a wired network. If you have devices such as Blu-ray players or game consoles that only have an Ethernet connection, you can simply use that Ethernet connection to connect to the gateway and then use the gateways’ wireless capabilities to connect to the network.

In this way, these devices can be connected without having to reconnect the house or pulling cables throughout the house. There is also the advantage of convenience. If you only need to move the device for Ethernet, all you have to do is move the bridge with the device to stay connected.

How do I set up a Wi-Fi bridge?

Fortunately, setting up a wireless bridge is actually one of the simplest tasks in a home network.

Use of WDS to bypass

  1. Most modern routers and bridges will be equipped with a Wifi Protected Setup (WPS) function. This allows you to connect devices to a secure network without having to enter a password by simply pressing a button on the router.
  2. If your devices allow it, simply configure the gateway to access the wireless network, connect to the device you want to connect to the network via Ethernet, and then press the WPS button on the router and gateway.
  3. This automatically connects your bridge to your router and thus to your network.

Keep in mind that SPF can be unsafe and you may be exposed to attacks. Use caution when using this function.

Manual bridge

If your router or gateway does not have this feature, you will need to connect your router to your computer via Ethernet and manually connect to the wireless network. In fact, given the security problems with WDS, it is often the preferred option.

  1. Once you have connected the router to your computer, simply enter the IP address of the gateway into your web browser to access the configuration page.
  2. Go to the bridge. Check the connection details in the manufacturer’s manual. If they’ve changed and you don’t know them, you can drop off the bridge at the factory.
  3. From there you need to find your network and connect to it by entering your Wi-Fi password.

The next step is also very simple. Now that your Bridge is connected to the network, all you have to do is connect an Ethernet cable between the Bridge and the Ethernet device. This gives the device access to your network!

If your bridge has only one Ethernet port, but you need to connect multiple devices, you should consider purchasing a switch. The switch has several Ethernet ports. This takes your single Ethernet connection and allows you to connect multiple devices. You can spend a lot of money on it, or you can spend a little. Many people can operate the uncontrolled main switch.

Is there an old router? You can try!

Although many parts of your home network can be quite expensive, you can actually connect your network to an old router for free!

Even though it’s not as simple as using a special bridge, the fact that it’s worthless can be more than makeup.

Make sure your router supports bridges. Each manufacturer and model can be configured in different menu ranges. In general, this option is likely to be found under Settings or Wireless Settings.

Another option (which is slightly more complicated) is to replace the router firmware with a Linux firmware called DD-WRT. It’s not the right way to go if you’re not sure about the technology. Incorrect installation of the DD-WRT may render the old router unusable.

You can then access the router’s menu by connecting to a PC and then changing the settings in the DD-WRT menu to turn it into a wireless client bridge. You also need to change the settings for the firewall, DHCP and other wireless networks. The following video helps with the explanation.
