Wireless A vs B vs G vs N vs AC vs AD – WiFi Router Standards

Today we live in a world of megabits per second and even gigabits per second (802.11ac). Well, that’s what the manufacturers tell us (actually, we’re still in the Mbps – megabits per second – speed range).

Wireless communication (Wi-Fi) has existed since the late 1990s. He went through the protocols at the time with weak security encryption, when the coverage was low and the speed, well… Pretty pathetic, actually! Of course, we didn’t care then. Why Wifi standards?

Wireless communication standards are defined by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).

The Wi-FiAlliance tests routers for IEEE compliance, although this is not mandatory. If the logo on your router’s packaging shows the logo below, it confirms interoperability. In addition, not all device models are subject to certification, as this can be costly.

Wireless A – What is 802.11a?

Let’s start with the first one (there was an 802.11 standard earlier, but it’s so old and outdated that we thought we wouldn’t do it).

The Wireless A was released in 1999 and became the standard at about the same time as the Wireless b. We are now approaching the wireless.

It is interesting to note that 802.11a with a few backups was faster than 802.11b and was in the 5 GHz band. It could reach 54 Mbps, but in the end it wasn’t fast enough. 802.11a ended up as Betamax… Although this is probably the best standard, the manufacturers have decided to stick with the Wireless B standard, so the Wireless A standard just didn’t get off the ground.

Because it was a 5 GHz system, the coverage area was relatively small.

Wireless B – What is 802.11b?

As mentioned above, version 802.11b was released at about the same time as Wireless A (1999). At that time it became the most popular standard, although the speed was only 11 Mbps. At the time, it was considered to be quite good because the Ethernet cable at that time was generally 10 Mbps (although the actual bandwidth of the cable was greater than that of WiFi).

Wireless B was in the 2.4 GHz band and was therefore more sensitive to interference from cordless phones, microwaves and child monitors throughout the house.

Wireless G – What is 802.11g?.

In 2003, 802.11g was ratified. Finally we saw the speed increase to 54 Mbps (yes, it seems strange, because all those years ago the Wireless A had the same function!).

It was back in the 2.4 GHz band and was even more popular than the Wireless B. At that time, Wi-Fi became very popular with consumers for convenience.

Type N Wireless Network – What is 802.11n?

What’s the Wireless N? The 802.11n standard was ratified in 2009, although the routers were on sale long before that. Manufacturers promise to 900 Mbps on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz via a 5 GHz channel connection and dual-band connection.

This is currently the most popular standard of all, although Crown is expected to move to the wireless AC standard soon, as more and more devices comply with thestandard.

802.11n also talks about the introduction of MIMO (Multiple In Multiple Out), which can process signals faster and more efficiently, especially when they are out of sync due to reflections in the house.

Wireless AC – What is 802.11ac?

It has been available on consumer routers since 2012. 802.11ac is the latest wireless standard. Speeds up to 3.2 Gbps are possible on the latest AC3200 routers.

This latest wireless standard is becoming increasingly popular today.

It only works in the 5 GHz band, and it goes without saying that wifi AC is the right standard if you are looking for the fastest wireless standard.

AD Wireless – What is 802.11ad?

.11ad is the newest and largest Wi-Fi standard.

It uses the 60 GHz spectrum, and at the time of writing this article it is only available on a few routers. In fact, there are no real devices that make it possible. In fact, this is limited to the wireless bridge between the wireless AD routers.

The sidewalk is very small and is only useful if there is a line of sight between the two nodes (because all obstacles, including walls and furniture, destroy the signal).

AC WiFi vs. N-Router

The difference of between Wireless N and AC is mainly in the speed. 802.11n is still good for most people, although AC routers are much cheaper now. But if you want to be sure tomorrow, or if you want to stream in HD or 4K, wireless routers on the mains are the best choice.

Even if you’re looking for the best game router for your Xbox 360, Xbox One or PS4, in most cases you’re better off with a wireless AC router.
