ProtonMail, based in Geneva, Switzerland, is a secure email service with the overall goal of creating an Internet that protects privacy. Founded in 2013 by Dr. Andy Yen, the service brings together scientists, engineers and developers with the common goal of protecting civil liberties on the Internet and leading the fight against global monopolistic organizations such as Google.
Unlike other advertising-based service providers, ProtonMail relies on crowdfunding to meet its needs. Support centers are located in San Francisco, California, and Skopje, Macedonia. This global network of support centers provides customer support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The sponsors of ProtonMail are Charles River Ventures and Geneva-based FONGIT (la Genevoise pour l’Innovation Technologique). At the same time, the MIT mentor advises the company.
If users have a free email ID with basic support and disabilities such as storage, messages per day and folder, they also have the option to upgrade to one of the paid ProtonMail packages starting at €5 per month or €48 per year.

One of the main reasons that should suffice is to protect your privacy. In recent years, privacy concerns have increased worldwide. Google certainly uses Chrome to track user activity, and if you are concerned about online privacy, you know it is not.

Because Gmail has Gmail, you can be sure that your email activity is tracked. In addition, targeted advertising responds to the psychology of the user and Gmail is not a service in itself, but an ecosystem of interconnected services that allows user data to be collected and targeted at all services. Google even personalizes your search in incognito mode, which is made easier by collecting data in your profile.
On the other hand, ProtonMail offers the following services, which make it an interesting alternative to Gmail and other similar services such as Yahoo. Android and iOS applications are also available.
ProtonMail provides an end-to-end encryption service that prevents third parties from reading the message. Even if the company cannot read your email, this does not apply to Gmail, which uses keywords in the subject line of the email for promotional purposes.
However, there is also a downside to the medal. If you forget your password, all data in your Inbox will be erased when you reset it. This helps protect the privacy of users in the event of an attack with brute force.
ProtonMail is based in Switzerland, allowing the company to establish itself outside EU and US jurisdiction. Swiss law does not allow the company to meet the supervisory requirements of countries such as the United States. Not even the Swiss authorities can force the company to use a monitoring system that provides a secure place to protect confidential user data.
An additional advantage is that the open source code of Protonmail means that the service is always free and transparent. However, there are possibilities for salary increases ranging from USD 4 per month to USD 24 per month. Users can choose according to their needs.
The company owns and controls all servers. The main data center is located 1000 meters below the rock. This highly secure data centre can withstand a nuclear attack. The servers use encrypted hard drives that are protected by a multi-level password protection system. In fact, this feature significantly improves data security.
The user can set a timer to destroy messages, after which the message and its contents are removed from the recipient’s Inbox. In addition, this service works for emails sent from the Proton service to the Proton service and to the Non-Tone service. The self-destructive reporting service has already been used by Cambridge Analyst in 2018.
SSL adds an extra layer of security to data that is already encrypted. The SSL Certificate Authority is QuoVadis Trustlink Schweiz AG. A Swiss certificate provider guarantees that the SSL infrastructure remains free of any US or European legislation.
Even if Protonmail isn’t as streamlined as Gmail, which syncs a lot of user data on its devices, it’s sure to get the job done without disrupting your life.
At first users may be a bit excited when using Protonmail, but after a while it’s easy to use and actually seems a lot less complicated and overloaded than Gmail.
In addition, the aesthetics are quite modern and the interface is simple and clear. For users who are new to the world of data monitoring, the website offers a list of blogs they can visit.
There are of course arguments for abusing such a reliable service, as we have seen in the Cambridge Analytics case. Anyway, this service is good for normal users. The security of our data is in our hands. Therefore, we strongly recommend users to try this mail service.
